Course Overview
Academic Professionals work in higher education settings such as universities, colleges, and private institutions, where they teach and/or conduct research to advance knowledge in their field. They engage with students, peers, and external stakeholders, and contribute to solving real-world challenges.
This apprenticeship develops full professional competence through extensive training in core academic responsibilities and one of two specialist routes: Teaching or Research. Entrants typically hold postgraduate qualifications (Level 7 or 8) and gain advanced skills through the programme.
Specialist areas include:
- Teaching Route: Focuses on leading teaching practice, developing innovative learning methods, supporting diverse learners, and using educational technologies effectively.
- Research Route: Prepares professionals to lead research projects, secure funding, collaborate externally, and produce impactful research outputs.
- Aligned with national standards (UKPSF and Vitae), this apprenticeship builds confident, capable academic professionals ready to excel in higher education.


Qualification Achieved
On completion of this apprenticeship, apprentice will hold a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship.
Additional qualifications achieved include:
- Level 2 Functional Skills Maths (If Applicable)
- Level 2 Functional Skills English (If Applicable)
Progression
The role may act as a gateway to further career and training opportunities, including, but not limited to:
- Senior Lecturer / Senior Teaching Fellow
- Head of School / Head of Academic Strategy
- Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) or HEA Fellowship (FHEA/SFHEA)
Learning and Assessment
Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary.
End Point Assessment
Each apprentice must undergo an independent end-point assessment to determine the outcome of their apprenticeship. The assessments will evaluate the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained during their programme. The methods in which this apprenticeship is assessed are:
- Assessment method 1 - Academic Professional Practice
- Assessment method 2 - Professional Conversation
- Assessment method 3 - Written Submission
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements for apprenticeships vary depending on the level and type of apprenticeship, as well as the employer.
General requirements be:
- At least 16 years old,
- Not be in any other education
- Live in England.

We offer a dedicated virtual learning platform which allows learners to keep on track of their course. In addition to this, it allows our tutors and employers to keep up-to-date with the progression of learners.
